It's only about 10 miles longer to sail to weather, and much more comfortable than steaming right into it.

This route is constructed with tacks that are 55 degrees off the wind, so you don't have to try to sail close to the wind. One key waypoint is Maw Point #2; if you can get to Maw Point, it's a 17 mile run all the way out to the edge of Royal Shoal.

Another key waypoint is #9, which is 1.4 miles north of Ocracoke Entrance.  The idea is to sail across the north of Royal Shoal with a bit of room to spare, so you won't have it right under your lee.  If the wind is blowing hard, be wary of that situation.  Crank up your engine at Waypoint #8, and take in your sails at Waypoint #9.
